Vigilante Group Kills Police Officer In Taraba

A police officer has been shot and killed in an ambush by a vigilante group in Taraba State.

The incident, according to the Commissioner of Police, David Iloyanomon, occurred on May 4, at Sandirde village, in Gassol local government council.

Iloyanomon, who identified the late officer as Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Tapu Godfrey, said the murder has triggered a swift response from law enforcement officials.

The victim, according to the commissioner, was part of a special strike force unit conducting a routine patrol when they were ambushed by a vigilante group led by Ali Dissol.

“The group opened fire, striking ASP Godfrey in the lap. Despite being rushed to the General Hospital in Sandirde for treatment, he was pronounced dead by medical personnel,” Iloyanomon said.

The police boss said the command has launched a full-scale manhunt for the suspects, stating that “we have deployed intelligence and operational resources to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.

While expressing condolences to the family, he assured the public that law enforcement agencies would arrest those involved in this heinous crime.

The Command reiterated its commitment to combating crime and maintaining public safety, urging residents to remain calm and report any information that could assist in the investigation.
