If you want to give your pet a unique name, it’s probably best to avoid Luna, Bella or Milo.

These names are among the most popular for dogs in 2024, and you’ll likely be hearing them shouted constantly at the park over the coming years.

According to research by Petsure, Luna is the UK’s favourite dog name, especially among cocker spaniels, retrievers, German Shepherds and staffies.

Bella, Milo, Willow and Poppy make up the rest of the top five for both cats and dogs, followed by Teddy, Lola, Daisy, Bobo, Rosie and Nala.

When it comes to the most-used names for the UK’s eight most popular breeds, Teddy is a common choice for cockapoos, likely because of the pooch’s cuddly appearance.

Flower-based names are big with Jack Russell owners and friendly Labrador retrievers are often called Buddy, while mythology is a major inspiration for those with German Shepherds – think names like Loki and Zeus.

To avoid a horde of dogs coming running when you shout you pet’s name, you may prefer something more out-there.

It can be a hard decision, though, so Petsure’s expert Allie recommends taking some time to get to know your pet before making your choice.

‘You perhaps may want to pick a name based on a unique physical feature, such as unusual fur markings,’ she adds.

Allie also recommends a short name with no more than two syllables to help with recall and to ‘prevent any confusion with other words and phrases.’

And once you’ve settled on a name, there’s nothing wrong with giving yourself some time to try it out.

‘Call your pet by that name for a few days and see how it feels,’ she says. ‘Pay attention to how it sounds when you say it aloud and how your pet responds. This trial can help check if the chosen name feels just right for both you and your pet.’
