Dentist warns eating this fruit is better than gum for fresh breath

When it comes to dental hygiene, we know to brush our teeth twice a day, floss and even add some mouthwash into the mix.

However, it’s not just these classic steps that’ll ensure you’ve got minty fresh breath: there are also natural remedies you can take, including enjoying a juicy piece of fruit.

Did you know that eating an apple can actually be better than chewing gum for fresh breath?

As Dr Tim Bradstock-Smith, leading dentist and owner of The London Smile Clinic tells Metro.co.uk, an apple a day does more than keep the doctor away – but the dentist, too.

Interestingly, the natural, crunchy texture of an apple acts as a natural toothbrush, helping to ‘scrub away’ any excess food particles and plaque from the teeth surfaces and gum line.

‘Chewing an apple increases saliva production, which helps wash away food particles and bacteria, reducing the risk of tooth decay and gum disease,’ Dr Tim outlines.

And, as we know, apples are rich in vitamins – like vitamin C, which are crucial in maintaining healthy gums.

They also contain polyphenols, ‘which have antibacterial properties that can help inhibit the growth of bacteria that cause cavities and bad breath,’ Dr Tim adds.

That’s not all: this crunchy snack is low in both sugars and acids, and unlike many processed foods, contain natural sugars ‘less likely to contribute to tooth decay when eaten in moderation.’

‘Although apples are slightly acidic, their acid content is much lower than that of many other fruits and soft drinks, making them a safer option for teeth enamel,’ Dr Tim explains. Breath mints, who?

And finally, chewing an apple can also help to promote blood flow, which in turn reduces the risk of gum disease. Similarly, they clean between the teeth and reduce the build-up of plaque.

Still thinking of reaching for the chewing gum? It might temporarily mask odours, but it doesn’t do much for your gum health and, in turn, breath freshness.

‘Chewing gum, on the other hand, may temporarily mask odours but doesn’t address the root cause. Second, apples contain natural enzymes that help neutralise odorous compounds in the mouth, whereas chewing gum often contains artificial flavours and sugars that can contribute to bacterial growth and bad breath over time,’ Dr Tim notes.

‘Gum can sometimes dry out the mouth, exacerbating bad breath in the long run. Lastly, apples are a healthy snack choice rich in vitamins and fibre, benefiting overall oral and systemic health, whereas gum provides no nutritional value.’

So, the next time you reach for the chewing gum mid-afternoon – stop yourself and consider picking up a Granny Smith instead. You’ll be doing not only your teeth but your vitamin consumption a favour.



Skipping this step when brushing your teeth is giving you bad breath

Brushing your teeth isn’t enough to avoid having bad breath. You’re definitely forgetting to brush another part of the mouth – and no, we’re not just talking about brushing your tongue.

We all know we should probably do more to have good oral hygiene (although, flossing with your hair and using mouthwash after you brush should be avoided).

In fact, he tells Metro.co.uk that it was one of the most common brushing mistakes he came across last year, as well as neglecting the tongue, which should also be brushed.

Skipping these parts of the mouth when brushing can lead to an accumulation of bacteria, resulting in bad breath and potential oral health issues.
