It’s about to be a hot Xeno summer and we’re all just along for the ride. A new featurette for Alien: Romulus is here and, clearly, director Fede Alvarez is taking things back to basics. The first few teases have made that clear, but here we really get to see the film’s balance of the slow horror of Ridley Scott’s 1979 original and the big action of James Cameron’s 1986 sequel.
Romulus is set between those films and follows a group of space colonizers who encounter everyone’s favorite killer alien, the Xenomorph, while scavenging on a mysterious space station. It focuses on Rain Carradine (Cailee Spaney) and her brother Andy (David Jonsson), both of whom we meet here in this new featurette. Check it out below to see all manner of new footage, story teases, and behind-the-scenes antics.
That’s a great teaser and you can tell everyone involved with this movie really wants to make something that’s close to the first two films. And, if we’re being honest, as long as it’s somewhere in that Alien 3 range, I think most fans will be happy. It’s probably a long shot for Alvarez, or frankly any director, to come close to those first two films. Many have tried, including Ridley Scott himself twice. But Romulus, for sure, at least looks like the Alien sequel most in line with the pieces that make this franchise tick.
Alien: Romulus co-stars Archie Renaux (Shadow and Bone), Isabela Merced (Madame Web), Spike Fearn (Aftersun), and Aileen Wu; Alvarez directs from a script he co-wrote with Rodo Sayagues. Scott is a producer. It opens in theaters August 16.
