Hot damn, this looks like a proper gut-punch waiting to happen. “We Live in Time” seems like it’s a swirling blend of the warm indie romances found in films like Drake Doremus’ “Like Crazy” mixed with the first ten minutes of Pixar’s “Up” to deliver that extra emotional (and potentially tragic?) oomph. Garfield and Pugh are titanic performers when the situation calls for it (some may argue that they can even dial it up a bit too much sometimes), but I trust they’ll be able to handle this material and take us on an emotional rollercoaster. Crowley looks like he’s absolutely in the pocket here, and I’m definitely ready to cry my eyes out watching this … how about you?
Here’s the film’s official synopsis:
Almut (Florence Pugh) and Tobias (Andrew Garfield) are brought together in a surprise encounter that changes their lives. Through snapshots of their life together — falling for each other, building a home, becoming a family — a difficult truth is revealed that rocks its foundation. As they embark on a path challenged by the limits of time, they learn to cherish each moment of the unconventional route their love story has taken, in filmmaker John Crowley’s decade-spanning, deeply moving romance.
“We Live in Time” hits theaters on October 11, 2024.
